Yoga today is accepted across globe as a beneficial practice. It is widely misunderstood as a form of exercise for weight loss. The benefits are infinite and weight loss or good health is only a small by-product only.

Yoga is a Sanskrit word which when translated into English means “union”. Union with what? With the ultimate or God or Infinity. It cannot be explained but has to be experienced. It is like explaining the taste of Mango to someone who has not even seen the fruit.

Origin of Yoga is as old as the starting of mankind. A proper documentation is done by saga “Pathanjali”. His compilation is called “Yoga Suthra”. Yoga science is based on “Sthoola” (Physical) and “Sookshma” (Astral or minute) components. For example Sthoola denotes our physical body and Sookshma is our subtle body or soul.

Shape of the bricks are same but we can design any type of building or house using them. So bricks are the basic elements for buildings , bridges and all structures.

According to Yoga the basic elements of all universe (Not limited to our small Earth !!! ) are the “ Pancha Bhoothas”. Pancha means Five(5) and Bhoothas means Elements.

What are they ?

Space / Ether

Science of Yoga says all living , non living , universe and astral bodies are associated with these 5 basic elements. Pancha bhoothas are arranged or “designed” to form all the above mentioned forms, including human beings. Billions of permutations and combinations are possible with these 5 elements and that is the reason why we see so much variety in this world and across universe.

Human form is also a combination of Panchabhoothas and when this balance is disturbed we feel the effect in the form diseases – either physical or that which affecting our mind.

Knowingly or unknowingly these 5 elements are associated with our daily life in many ways.

Few examples are stated here:

If you observe daily rituals in a temple it is closely associated with Panchabhoothas.

Fire – Lamp

Air – Dhoopam Stick / Agarbatthi / Blowing of Conch (Shankhu)

Space – Flowers

Earth – Offering to Deity ( Prasad / Fruits )

Water – Theertham

Five fingers in each hand represent Panchabhoothas. When we say Namasthe, all fingers touch together. Indirectly we are doing Yoga, to bring together the 5 elements. This is a Yoga Mudra. ( Will soon post a separate article elaborating about Yoga Mudras and their healing effects)

Panchabhoothas are also linked to our body

Fire – Hunger / Desires

Air – Breathing

Space –  Mind / Thoughts

Earth – Physical body (Muscles , Bones, Organs )

Water – Blood

In Vassthu Shasthra (Ancient Indian science/architecture for designing Buildings) 5 elements are represented at the following positions :

Fire – South East

Air – North West

Space –  Center Portion

Earth – South West

Water – North East

When we harmonize 5 elements in our house or building through Vasthu , peace and prosperity prevails at that place.

So when we try to understand these basic elements and keep them healthy and balanced all the superficial symptoms (Which modern Medical science calls as diseases) can be completely avoided.

By balancing the 5 elements we can live a peaceful life free of medicines and ailments.

Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu !!!!

Pradakshinam is a ritual done by every Hindu on a daily basis , while visiting a temple or doing a pooja. Pradakshinam has to be done at temple in such a way that the deity or god is always on the right side (Dakshina) of your body. Hence the name “Pra-Dakshina”.

Pradakshina Manthra – To be chanted while doing the pradakshinam :

Yani kani cha papani                      (Sins ,whatever it may be)
Janmanthara krithani cha             (done in this and previous births)

Thani thani vinashyanthi              (all of them be destroyed)
Pradakshinam pade pade             (by doing Pradakshinam- step by step)

yani kani–whatever; ca–and; papani–sins; Janmantara – this birth and earlier births; kritani – done (by me); ca–also, tani tani–all of them; vinashyanti — are destroyed; pradaksinam– (by) the self circumambulation ; pade pade–at every step.

This Sloka says that Pradakshina will distroy all sins. Pradakshinam is nothing but a way to bow down to the Aathma (purusha) residing inside your physical body. By doing so all your sins are cleansed. It also helps you to be aware of the presence of divine energy with in you.

While doing pooja at home you can do “Aathma  Pradikshanam “ , if you don’t have space. This is done by rotating clockwise 3 times while chanting the above mentioned Pradakshina Manthra.

Shiva purana says that “Rudraksh” is the gift of Lord Shiva to mankind.

It’s name is derived from the combination of 2 Sanskrit  words :

Rudra and Aksha.

Rudra means Lord Shiva and Aksha means eye.

It means Rudraksha originated from the eyes of Lord Shiva as tears and bhoomi devi conceived his tears as the  rudrakha tree.

Rudraksha Trees:

Ripe fruits of Rudraksha tree :-

How Beads are derived from these fruits :

Where it is found :

It is abundantly found near the abode of Lord Shiva – Kailash or Himalayas (Nepal).

It is also found in India , China, Srilanka,Africa,Indonesia etc.

How to find original Rudraksha beads :

Because of its popularity, counter feet rudrakshas are abundant in the market for sale.

They either carve rudrakha design on to a wooden bead or use heavy metals like lead to make other look alike to be passed on as originals.

Tantrics and Yogis can identify the Power of Rudrakshas by keeping Rudraksha in their fist and observing pulse (Nadi spandana) . That is impossible for normal persons.

Below mentioned simple tests can be used by anyone to find out Original Rudraksha.

There are 4 traditional methods to select genuine rudraksh :

1)    Copper Test

Original Rudraksha is blessed with a natural magnetic field around it’s edges.

Keep rudrakha between 2 copper plates/coins and you can see mild deflection or rotation of the seed due to its magnetic properties.

Instructions :

Place Rudraksha on one coin vertically with it’s poles facing up and down.

Bring the second  copper coin slowly, so that you can see the movement.

Evaluating outcome:

Original Rudraksha must rotate in Clockwise direction (Pradakshina). There will be some Rudrakshas which will rotate Anti-clockwise (Apradakshina). Discard  them. Eventhough they are also Rudrakshas ,they will have Negative energy.

If you don’t see any movement or deflection then the bead is either damaged or fake.

2) Water Test

Seeds of any tree will float in water.

Put the Rudraksha  into a container filled with water or milk.Eventhough it is a seed , original will sink to the bottom.Rudraksha beads from unripe fruits will also float on water. But they are useless.

Please note that this test alone is not safe now because of clever counter feats – made using wood or implanted with heavy metals.

3) Temperature test:

It is a simple test which highlights an important property of Rudraksha. Place Rudraksha in a glass of water (just enough to cover Rudraksha). Record temperature by using a Thermometer. Record the temperature after 30 minutes. If the Rudraksha used is original ,you can observe 1 or 2 degrees centigrade rise of temperature.

4) Test using Milk :

This  is a time consuming test. Place Rudraksha in a glass of fresh milk. Test the milk after 2 days. The milk will not get spoiled. Some quality Rudrakshas can protect milk for even 3 days. Ek mukhi Rudraksha will work for 5 to 7 days!!!

All said and done , the luck to have in possession an original rudraksha is greatly determined by your karmas and blessings from guru and god.

So keep praying sincerely to Shiva and he will drop few of his tears for you.

You can order genuine Rudrakhas from this below link of Isha Foundation:

Lalitha Sahasranamam (1000 names of devi) is a secret and very sacred text or mantra in Hindu religion. This mantra has been revealed to mankind through the discussion between lord Hayagriva and the great saga Agasthya.
It is very popular and many of us recite it on a daily basis or at least on Friday.[If you don’t have a copy of this mantra please get it from here : Lalitha Sahasranama Stotram or put a comment and we will mail you a soft copy free of cost.We also have this in other regional languages]

Though we chant this often many of us doesn’t know why we do this and the benefits we acquire by doing this. Here is an attempt to summarize the benefits (both materialistic and Spiritual) of chanting Lalitha Sahasranama as per the “Phalasruthi” [ Sanskrit for “results” ] given in Devi Bhagavatham and Devi Puranam:

Lalitha Sahasranama Phala Sruthi
[The effect of reciting the thousand names of  this mantra ]
Courtesy & Translation by P. R. Ramachander

[Unlike Vishnu sahasranama, where phala sruthi is the part of the stotra, in the case of Laitha Sahasranama, phala sruthi is the next chapter and separate from it. So it is not recited along with the thousand names of Lalitha. ]

And the name Matha is important and should not be forgotten.

Vishnu nama paraa kechith Shiva nama paraa pare,
Na kaschid aapi lokeshu Lalitha nama thathpara. 70

Better than the names of Vishnu are the names of Shiva,
But in all the worlds there is nothing better than names of Lalitha.

Yenanya devathaa nama keerthitham Janama kotishu,
Thasyaiva bhavathi sradhaa Sri devi nama keerthane. 71

Even if the names of other Gods are sung in crores of births,
It is equal only to singing of the thousand names with devotion.

Charame janmani yadha Sri vidhyaupasako bhaveth,
Nama sahasra padascha thadha charama janmani. 72

If you become at your last birth an Upasaka of Sri Vidhya,
By reading the thousand names, this birth would become your last.

Yadhaiva virala loke sri vidyachara vedhina,
Thadaiva viralo guhya nama saahasthra pataka. 73

In this world it is rare to find Upasakas of Sri Vidhya,
And it is also rare to find those who read the secret thousand names.

Manthra raja japaschaiva chakra rajarchanam thadha,
Rahasya nama patascha naalpayasya thapas phalam. 74

Chanting the king of chants followed by worship of Sri Chakra,
And reading the thousand names gets the same result as doing Austerity (Thapas)

Apadannama saahasram preenayedhyaa Maheswareem,
Sa chakshushaa bina roopam pasyedheva vimoodadhi. 75

Without reading these thousand names and trying to please the Goddess,
Is like a fool trying to see a form without the eyes.

Rahasya nama saahasram thyakthwaa ya sidhi kaamuka,
Sa BHojanam vinaa noonam Kshunnivarthi mabheepsathi. 76

Forsaking the thousand names and trying to get occult powers,
Is like satiating hunger after forsaking all meals.

Yo Bhakthaa Lalitha devya sa nithyam Keertheyadhidham,
Nanyadhaa preeyathe Devi kalpa koti shathair api. 77

That devotee who sings these names of Lalitha Devi,
Need not sing any other for she will be pleased,
Only by singing of this even for hundreds of eons.

Thasmad rahasya naamani, Sri Mathu prayatha padeth,
Yithi they kaditham Stotram rahasyam, Kumbha sambhava. 78

These thousand names are to be read for making the mother happy,
But this prayer which I told is a secret, Oh sage Agasthya.

Na vidhyaavedhinebrooya nnama bhakthaya kadachana.,
Yadhaiva gopyaa Sri Vidhya thadha gopyamidham mune. 79

The learned in Vedas, if they do not recite these names at least once,
The Sri Vidhya would be kept secret from them, Oh sage.

Pasu thulyeshu na broyajjaneshu sthotramuthamam,
Yo dadhadhi vimoodathma Sri vidhya rahithaya thu. 80

People who do not tell this prayer are like animals,
If they give Sri Vidhya to the foolish without this prayer.

Thasmai kupyanthi yoginya, sonartha sumahaan smruth,
Rahasya nama saahasran thsmad sangopyedhidham. 81

The Yogis would be very angry with them,
For this would lead them to problems,
And that is why these secret thousand names,
Are kept as great secret from every one.

Swathanthrena mayaa noktham thavapi kalasee bhava,
Lalitha preranaa deva mayoktham stotramuthamam. 82

Of Sage Agasthya, I would not have told them to you independently.
But for the advice given to me by Goddess Lalitha to tell you these.

Keerthaneeya midham bhakthyaa Kumbhayone nirantharam,
Thena thushtaa Maha devi thavabheeshtam pradasyathi. 83

Please recite these with devotion, Oh sage Agasthya,
And the goddess will be pleased and fulfill your wishes.

Sootha Uvacha:
Sootha said:

Yithyukthwa Sri Hayagreevo dhyathwa Sri Lalithambikaam,
Aananda magna hrudaya sadhya pulakitho bhaved. 84

After telling thus, sage Hayagreeva meditated on Goddess Lalitha,
Was drowned in happiness and became enraptured.

Ithi Sri Brahmanda purane Uthara Kande,
Sri Hayagrrevagasthya samvade, Sri Lalitha sahasra nama stotra,
Phala srutheernama uthara Bhaga.

Thus ends the telling of effect of reciting Lalitha Sahasra Namam
Called The portion after,
Which is in Brahmanda Purana in the Uthara Kanda,
In the discussion between Sage Hayagreeva and Sage Agasthya.

Note : While drafting this post , one of my friend came running to the room and told that his wife delivered a baby (Their 1st child). When i asked baby boy or girl , he said he is waiting for the information from hospital. Since this happened while i was reading/editing  “Lalitha Sahasra Namam” Phalashurti post i was also eager to know. After 20 minutes he updated me that he is blessed with a baby boy.Coincidence is that the “Phalashurti” says that any one who chants “Lalitha Sahasra Namam” will be blessed with a son (as first baby in family) — Ohm Lalithambikaye Namaha!!!!!

Shani-Deva Lord Shani Deva

Shani dasha or period is inevitable in every one’s life.Legend goes that even devas are not spared by shani [only exceptions being clever Ganapathy and powerful Anjaneya]

So if you or any of your relatives/friends are going through this difficult period [ of 7.5 years or sade sathi] , then use the following proven rituals to reduce the adverse impacts and lead a peaceful life:

1.  Shani Mantra

Please make it a point to recite this short shani mantra for 108 times every day.If not having time, atleast do 8 times daily to tide through this testing period in life.

2. Hanuman Chalisa

Hanuman is supposed to be “Chiran jeevi” or the one with infinite life on earth. While he was on his way to Lanka to find Seetha Devi , he has seen “Navagrahas” being captured and tied together by Ravana.Navagrahas knew that only Anjaneya has the power to release them from the clutches of  evil king Ravana. They worshipped Hanuman and requested him to free them from lanka.Hanuman immediately realised the presence of Shani bhagavan amongst the Navagrahas and asked him “If i release you , you will look at me and i will be under your spell for 7.5 years”.For this Shani replied that he will not do that and even spare those who worship Anjaneya from the ill effects of shani dasha. So recite “Hanuman Chalisa” on Tuesday,Thursday&Saturday. If not possible on all 3 days atleast on Tuesday.Visit Hanuman temple on every Saturday during your Shani Dasha period.

3. Mrityunjaya Mantra

If your Shani Dhasha effect is very severe (which can be known from your “Janma Kundali” or ” Horoscope ” ) then to protect you from the fear of untimely accidents / deceases recite “Mrityunjaya Mantra” atleast once before starting your day:

Om Thryambakam Yajamahe                                                                 Sugandhim PushtiVardhanam                                                                         Urvarukamiva Bandhanath                                                                             Mrithyor Mooshiyamamrith.

Ohm NaMah ShiVaYa
Om Nama Shivaya
Om Namah Shivaya

Many knows this is the “panchakshari” (5 letter) beeja or moola mantra for lord Shiva.
Now where are these 5 letters ? What is the significance of this mantra? What is the meaning of this mantra?
Let’s look at the excerpts from ” Avdhoot Babaji’s ” question & answer session:

“Shiv Panchakshari Mantra is drawn from the five elements of nature namely, Earth, Sky, Water, Air and Fire. This Mantra is capable of cleansing up all these elements. See of this Bija Mantra has all the characteristics of its parent body. In a way it is a miniscule of its parent form, complete with everything. A Seed of a gigantic banyan tree is a comparatively tiny object but it has everything in it, right from trunk, leaves and other attributes. Shiv Panchakshari Mantra is evolved from the five seeds of aforesaid natural elements, Namah Shivaya. Na Consecrates Prithvi Tatva, Ma does the same with Jal Tatva (Water factor) Shi energizes Agni Tatva (Fire element) Va energizes Vayu Tatva (Air factor) and finally Ya energizes Akash Tatva (Sky element). Om purifies Bramhatatva and Crown Chakra.

Whevever a Sadhak invokes this Mantra during meditation or Tandav, he does so giving the impression as if he is applying percussion beats on every Chakra, using the skillful strokes of a Tabla Player. On the note of Na he starts from Muladhara, with Ma he reaches Swadisthar, as he says Shi he enters Manipur and at Anahata he produces the sound Vaya. In a subtle manner if you look at the whole pattern it seems like a sequence of percussion notes of Mridang (musical instrument).

Shiv Panchakshari Mantra has terrific vibrations which cleanse all five elements present inside the body.  “

All the “panchabhootas” are tied together with the string of lord shiva’s shakthi to make this beautiful mantra “garland”.

It’s evident from many other old scriptures like “Shiva Purana” and “Vedas” that chanting of this basic panchakshari mantra itself will lead the devotee or seeker towards “moksha” or “Eternal Bliss” or “Success (Both spiritual&materialistic)”.

So chant or sing panchakshari and be with Shiva in the bliss trance !!!

Ohm NaMah ShiVaYa
Om Nama Shivaya
Om Namah Shivaya
Ohm Nama Shivaya

Ohm Shivoham … Ohm Shivoham…. Rudra Namam Bhajeham….Bhajeham……
